Learning is critical to your success in public health. To learn and grow, you must invest the time. Self-Assessments are the cornerstone in maximizing the limited time you have to spend in learning by helping you focus on your individual needs.

The Self-Assessment helps you assess your proficiency in a wide and diverse range of competencies and to focus your development efforts on those areas which are most important to your local conditions and your individual situation. You can use the results to develop an individualized development plan, share with your leader and peers to develop a 360 degree view of your proficiency, or to guide a mentoring relationship. The Self-Assessments also help you locate the small set of very specific resources you need from among the huge library of learning resources that is available to you.

The Competencies serve as the basis for the Self-Assessment. Use the Self-Assessment to assess your level of proficiency in each of the items listed on the form. This will help you identify priority topics for knowledge and skill development through self-guided learning using the Learning Resource Toolkit, and through other activities mutually determined with your mentor and/or supervisor.

  • Download the Self-Assessment form by clicking the link below. The Self-Assessment is large, so please be patient. It may take a minute or longer to download. When prompted, Save the file on your computer so you can save your answers. When you open the spreadsheet, a security warning will be displayed indicating that the spreadsheet contains macros. Select Enable Macros to ensure the self-assessment operates properly.
  • The Self-Assessment consists of one page for each competency area and one page that presents the results of your Self-Assessment and gives you a way to prioritize your learning activities based on the results.
  • You may print out the form and work through it by marking up the paper version and then transferring your information to the form online if you wish. Please remember to printout out all of the pages in the worksheet.
  • Complete the Self-Assessment for each competency area by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the form. When you have completed the Self-Assessments, you can review your results on the first page, Results.
  • On the Results page, you can identify how important each of the competency areas are for your personal development and the worksheet will recommend a learning priority for each competency area. Learning priorities are based on the following matrix, which compares the relative importance of the competency are to your role, as defined by you, to your individual level of proficiency in that area.
In the example illustrated by the red star on the diagram below, the person completing the self assessment has scored in the None category for this particular competency area. He or she has also indicated that this competency area is fairly important to his or her role considering their individual circumstances. The combination of low competency and high importance results in a recommended Learning Priority of 3, Highest Learning Priority. In the example illustrated by the blue star, the person completing the self-assessment has received a score of Knowledgeable in the competency area and has rated the importance of this competency to his or her individualized situation as low. The combination of low role priority and relatively high competency results in a recommended Learning Priority of 1, Lowest Learning Priority.

  • You can then use the resulting Learning Priorities to help you decide where to focus your development efforts.
  • Complete the Self-Assessment before meeting with the liaison and/or mentor, since this will help guide the development of a plan for your orientation.
  • When you have completed your Self-Assessment, please e-mail a copy to waphtn@doh.wa.gov. Your information will only be used in the aggregate and will not be associated with you or your personal information in any way.
