Introduction to the Learning Resource Toolkit

The Learning Resource Toolkit provides resources and activities intended to help orient public health leaders to their roles, increase their level of knowledge about specific topics, and identify references for obtaining additional information as needed.

It is organized to correspond with the framework used in other sections of the Orientation: the nine competency domains identified through the Public Health Improvement Partnership, and related knowledge areas that have been identified as areas of focus or responsibility for individuals in local public health leadership roles. Specific functional roles (e.g. Health Officer, Administrator, Public Health Nursing Director, Environmental Health Director, etc.) are also included.

The sections within the Learning Resource Toolkit are listed in the left side of the screen and called Knowledge Areas.

Orientation Plan

The Learning Resource Toolkit should be reviewed by the new local health officer after s/he completes the self-assessment and before the initial meeting with the State Health Officer. After discussion with the State Health Officer and others, items should be selected from the Toolkit for inclusion in the new health officer’s orientation plan, based on the new health officer’s prior training and experience and current roles and responsibilities.

Ordering Orientation Materials

The orientation plan will serve as an "order form" to request orientation materials or the arrangement of certain meetings. A copy of the completed plan should be forwarded to the Washington State Department of Health Learning Resource Coordinator. Proposed orientation activities and materials will be entered into a tracking system. As requested, orientation materials will be sent to the new health officers and meetings will be arranged. During the orientation period, the new health officer should feel free to request additional items from the Learning Resource Coordinator or discuss the inclusion of items not listed on the Toolkit with the State Health Officer.

Any questions about the items in the toolkit or how to acquire them should be directed to:
