KNOW HIV Prevention Education
for Health Care Facility Employees

The 1988 Washington AIDS Omnibus Law requires that certain agencies and individuals receive HIV/AIDS training for their licensure or certification.

The Washington State Department of Health developed the Know HIV Prevention Education for Health Care Facility Employees in order to serve the needs of health care facilities and licensed and non-licensed health care workers.  This curriculum manual is the state model, designed as a complete minimum training for specified certification or licensing requirements for HIV/AIDS education.

State model designed to meet requirements for instruction about sexually transmitted diseases.
(You will leave this website.)

Washington State Department of Health does not provide HIV/AIDS training or certification for licensed and non-licensed health care workers.  Agencies offering HIV/AIDS training with certificates of completion are on the HIV/AIDS Training page.

KNOW is intended to be used by the educator teaching the required training.  It is not intended to be a self-study manual.  The Department of Health recommends that the required training for licensure or compliance with Washington laws be taught in traditional classroom style, with an expert instructor who can answer technical questions.  Reading this manual and taking a test is not a preferred method of instruction, given the complex nature of the subject.

The KNOW HIV Prevention Education for Health Care Facility Employees covers specific topics for an HIV/AIDS education program.  Selection of topics may be made to meet specific licensing boards' requirements.

As a general rule, all six topic areas must be covered for the seven-hour licensing requirements; and, topic areas 1, 2, 5 and 6 must be covered for the four-hour licensing requirements and for non-licensed health care facility employees who have no specific hourly requirements.  However, licensing boards have individual requirements and it is important to check directly with the agency overseeing the area in which licensure is sought in order to ensure compliance.

KNOW (Adobe Acrobat, 99 p., 1635 kb) is a public domain publication and may be copied or reprinted in any amount.  Alternative formats of KNOW can be ordered ( limit of 5 copies) from the DOH warehouse or requested by contacting by Barbara Schuler.
