To find out about national breastfeeding rates, visit the CDC Breastfeeding Data and Statistics website.

Healthy People 2010 has set national health objectives.  Washington WIC is meeting the Healthy People 2010 goals for breastfeeding initiation.  We are still striving to meet the goal to have over 50% of our infants continuing to breastfeed by the age of 6 months, and 25% continuing to breastfeed at 1 year of age.

Women who choose to breastfeed tend to be older, with higher levels of education and income. Breastfeeding rates are highest among women who are white, married, and/or live in the Western United States.  Special attention is given to promote breastfeeding in a culturally relevant manner to clients of ethnic and cultural backgrounds that have lower breastfeeding rates.
