Heart disease and stroke are leading killers of Washingtonians. This disease and associated risk factors affect tens of thousands of us. Effective steps can be taken at several stages to prevent heart disease and stroke, as well as to help control the disease in those who already have it.

Strategies to Prevent and Control

Heart Disease and Stroke:

  • Find and treat risk factors—high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and obesity

  • Identify and treat first heart attacks and strokes—know the signs and symptoms, know to call 9-1-1, have an effective emergency response system

  • Prevent repeat heart attacks and strokes—changes in lifestyle to reduce disability

The Washington State Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal is to build statewide support; to begin programs that address people with established heart disease or stroke, as well as those at high risk for developing the diseases. This includes people with high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes.

The Washington State Public Health Action Plan for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and Management , (PDF, 6330KB),was developed to guide us from now through 2010 to help make a difference in the lives of people in Washington State. Executive summary

The Burden of Heart Disease and Stroke in Washington State, (PDF, 2007KB), examines available data about risk factors for heart disease and stroke, both in the general population as well as in those with heart disease or stroke. Hospitalization and mortality data are analyzed, as well. The Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Advisory Council used this Burden Report as a tool in their state planning process.
