The Department of Health purchases and distributes vaccines for children ages 0 through 18 years in Washington State.

Current Updates

Influenza Vaccine Supply for 2008-09 Season (September 18, 2008)
  • Flu vaccine orders will be accepted starting the last week of September 2008 for October 2008 delivery.
  • Each local health jurisdiction will receive an allocation of flu products. Contact Mike Bin for your allocation.
  • Flu allocation tracking:
    • Each time there is a shipment of influenza vaccine available at the distributor, your shipment will be sent based on allocation. You may enter that number on your tracking tool and begin applying provider orders against that number. This year's tracking tool includes a column that will allow you to track all provider requests, as well as the amount of influenza vaccine you approve. Contact Mike Bin for a copy of the flu vaccine tracking tool.
  • See the September 12, 2008 Vaccine Supply Update for more information. Links to these communications are located under Recent Communications to Local Health Jurisdictions.
  • See links to the flu vaccine order form and accountability forms under Vaccine Management Forms.

Pentacel® Integration into State-Supplied Vaccine Supply to Select Providers (Aug. 12, 2008)

CDC is requiring all states to implement the newly licensed DTaP/IPV/Hib combination vaccine, Pentacel®, beginning with August 2008 Hib vaccine orders. The amount of Pentacel® allocated to Washington is not expected to significantly increase the overall Hib allocation for Washington (or the nation); the shortage recommendation to only administer the primary series remains in effect. Pentacel® will only be distributed to select providers. Providers should contact their local health jurisdiction for more information.

New 2008 Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit from CDC. This recently updated toolkit will provide you with general guidelines for correct vaccine storage and handling.

LHJ Federal Assistance in the Form of Vaccines and A133 Audit Requirements (PDF, 46 KB) Updated Sept. 19, 2008

Updated information on A133 audit requirements for providers receiving vaccines through the childhood vaccine program within the context of third party distribution system:

  • Vaccinating providers and vaccinated individuals are not considered subrecipients. The value of vaccine received is not a grant expenditure for purposes of determining audit coverage and reporting for those entities.
  • See the complete final language of the OMB Circular (PDF, 117 KB) from the State Auditor's Office.

Hib Vaccine Shortage and Interim Recommendations (PDF, 39 KB)

  • Merck has voluntarily recalled about one million doses of Hib vaccine. The problem that lead to the recall has stopped their production of Hib vaccine, creating a shortage that will last until the production issue is resolved.
  • CDC recommends deferring the 12-15 month booster of Hib vaccine for all children not at increased risk for Hib disease.
  • CDC will be using a month-to-month allocation process to manage Hib vaccine supply during the shortage.
  • CDC flyer reminding providers of the interim Hib vaccination recommendations. (PDF, 524 KB) This flyer is being included in all Hib vaccine shipments to providers.
