Maternal and Infant Health

What does Maternal and Infant Health (MIH) do? 

• MIH focuses on preventive and primary care for pregnant women, mothers, and infants.

• MIH supports healthy birth outcomes by improving health and support services for pregnant and postpartum woman and their infants. 
• MIH priority areas include pregnancy planning, access to prenatal care, domestic violence during pregnancy, smoking cessation, alcohol and drug use during pregnancy, breast feeding, nutrition, sleep position, environmental exposure to tobacco smoke, and provider education. 

MIH accomplishes its work in four major areas

• Assessment

MIH gathers data about characteristics of pregnant and postpartum women, services they use and services that would be helpful. Assessment activities enable health care professionals and community partners to understand the needs of women and infants, plan programs and services, and develop policies to promote maternal and infant health.

• Provider education

MIH programs educate, update, and serve as resources for health care professionals on a variety of topics to improve quality of care for women and infants.

• Services

MIH provides and promotes services to keep pregnant women and newborns healthy.

• Local and State Partners

MIH collaborates with numerous agencies to provide and promote services for pregnant women and newborns.
