Perinatal Partnership Against Domestic Violence

The Perinatal Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PPADV) is a statewide partnership of state agencies and health care professional organizations dedicated to reducing domestic violence during pregnancy and after delivery. This work group was formed in 1996 to develop questions and a curriculum to educate perinatal providers about universal screening during prenatal postpartum visits, and identification and referral of women experiencing domestic violence during and after pregnancy.

The PPADV:

Developed a statewide training system consisting of:

  • The PPADV curriculum
  • Inclusion of questions on the PAC screening tool called the Prenatal Record
  • Development of and Support to 20 training pairs consisting of advocates and perinatal care providers who are located in local communities
  • An advisory group that meets quarterly to exchange information, develop materials, review materials and articles and develop funding opportunities to support the PPADV effort.
  • A booklet for healthcare professionals titled, "Domestic Violence and Pregnancy:  Guidelines for Screening and Referral." This booklet is available on-line or can be ordered, at no cost to you, by using the MIH Publications Order Form (specifically lists DOH maternal and infant health related publications).

Maintains a Domestic Violence and Pregnancy Fact Sheet (October, 2006) to inform and update providers.

The partnership consists of representatives from:

  • Washington State Obstetrical Association;

The Perinatal Domestic Violence Identification Services:  A Guide to Culturally Relevant Care in Health Clinics (PDVIS Guide), April 2004

This guide is the product of a collaborative grant between DOH and the International Community Health Services Clinic to provide community health clinics with methods for implementation of a culturally relevant domestic violence identification system in a prenatal clinic setting.  The PDVIS Guide offers an assessment tool, suggested activities, tools, protocols and lessons learned for implementation of training, protocol development, screening and community education.  The assessment and activities can be part of a clinic assurance system.  A MS Excel spreadsheet is included for electronic assessment.
