Benefits of Recycling and Proper Disposal

Power Reduction Savings

Using fluorescent lights as an alternative to normal incandescent and other high wattage lights saves power and saves costs due to heating and air conditioning.  High wattage incandescent and other bulbs give off tremendous amounts of heat, requiring more air conditioning.  Power savings add up over time impacting business.

Attracting Energy-Conscious Work Force and Customers
Green businesses are on the increase and are steadily building their client base by offering safe, energy efficient alternatives to traditional products.

There are many great products available that can be purchased and used in place of mercury products.  Programmable thermostats, digital and band thermometers, and low-mercury fluorescent lights are current examples of mercury product alternatives.

No longer can we simply throw mercury-containing products “away”.  The environment laden with mercury causes health problems for people.  Mercury-containing items must be disposed at a hazardous waste facility.  Many small businesses can be classified as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CE-SQG) for proper disposal purposes.   For more information on EPA’s CE-SQG, visit EPA's Web site.   Large businesses must arrange for proper disposal through a hazardous waste disposal company.

Lower Insurance Rates
Established safety practices and guidelines in business settings can help prevent or lessen the harmful effects of accidental exposures to mercury.  Fewer job-related accidents and injuries result in lower Labor and Industry insurance rates. Visit the Washington State Department of Labor and Industry Web site to learn more about reducing risks to employees.
